I put a relay in and it worked fine to start the van, but it wouldn't drop
out when I turned off the ignition, there apparently was just enough
current from somewhere to keep the relay energized??

I have a cold start relay so wiring to/from front of bus should not be an
issue and this has worked fine for quite a few years (replaced relay to
check)and in fact the relay I used was a spare cold start relay
