Ok – I got a new set of points and condenser this morning. I had a new rotor in my stock of spare parts. I went to take the condenser off – and the bolt that goes thru the side wall of the distributor, also went thru what appears to be a small grounding strap. Searching the net – I see it is supposed to attach to the breaker plate. I also thought there was a small piece of felt supposed to go under the rotor. This is missing too.

I also see that some distributors don’t have this ground strap inside it. I’m not sure where this one came from. I am guessing/hoping that my distributor doesn’t need this ground strap?

I got it back together. Still not running correctly. New Points, rotor, condenser.

I checked the coil resistance – 3.8 ohms. Which I think is good.

I have replaced the spark plugs. They were a little black on the end – as though it is running too rich. I took it for a ride – it is better, but still doesn’t seem quite right. When I returned – the engine still seems way too hot for such a short drive.

I have distributor JUR / 0231 137 005 / 111 905 205 N.

I’m bringing over to a VW mechanic to see what he thinks – I’ll keep you posted. I can’t put any more time in this – I thought it would be a simple thing to get going again, so I could work on my ’78 westy shifting issues. Instead I’ve spent a few days on it. I guess the good thing I’ve addressed some issues that needing attending to.
