Ok Tuesday morning update.

I checked valves - all ok. Valve covers dry - ie no leaks at gaskets.
I replaced the tailpipe gasket - the tailpipe seemed a little loose. I am sure this is not related - but at least this time with my bus is getting me to address/see some other apparent issues.

I realize the fuel filter between the fuel pump and carb may have been replaced before I flushed the tank - so I put a new filter in here.

I went to change the coil - and realized the coil clamp was loose. So I tightened this up. I was wondering does the clamp that holds the coil do anything aside from holding the coil in place?

Not sure I mentioned this - when pulling the carb, I took the distributor cap off. I also pulled the rotor to check it. It was almost rusted onto the distributor shaft. I polished this up a bit, and replaced it.

I took it for a spin, after idling for about 5-10 minutes. I went around the block. Seemed ok - thought I'd fixed it, but then on an uphill climb - it started sputtering again. A serious lack of power. Eventually I made it home - and checked the engine compartment. Fuel filters have fuel in them. I don't think fuel supply is the issue. The engine compartment was also still really hot - dipstick almost too hot to touch. I wonder if my carb needs adjusting? If it was running lean - would it get that hot that fast?

Oh yeah - in case you have lost track - this is all in relation to my '65 EZ camper. Originally my '78 westy was having trouble shifting. So I was troubleshooting that. Then realized I probably need to pull the whole shift rod, check bushings etc. As I kind of need a car - I thought I could just bring my '65 back into service while I take my '78 shifter apart. Now neither bus is working properly :(

I'm going to go out and get some dry gas- maybe there was some residual water in tank from when I flushed it. I'll also try to adjust the carb.

I am a bit stumped - I have not checked spark plugs yet, but if they were bad, or dirty - I would imagine the bus wouldn't run at all, and it wouldn't make the bus run hot, right?

Any other ideas?

Replace all of your fuel hoses..they can 'collapse' and you would never know it, or the inner walls can collapse and the outers would look normal, but no gas flow! Don't know 'your bus history' but change them all for 'peace of mind' while driving! Ignition coils can cause similar problems, fine while they are 'cold', but when 'worked' heat up and break down. Just Food for thought!
