The Bosch 55A alternator on my '73, one of the first after the
long-delayed departure from the superseded generator, was failing to
charge, as indicated by the red discharge warning light showing continually
(albeit dim at higher rpm). After ascertaining that approx half of the
slip-rings had worn away, and failing to find a reco'd or new alternator, I
reinstalled the 45-y-old alternator. The discharge warning remains as it
was, prompting me to take on tour a mains-powered battery charger +
extension lead to plug in at stopovers.
I have no ammeter nor voltmeter on the dash.
Now I find the battery is being held at 12.5 â 12.6 V after several
runs incl brief uses of the starter motor. I wonder whether, when the slip
rings are only approx half complete, somehow the discharge warning light is
tricked into remaining faintly on when actually a slight charge is
occurring as intended for cruising with a fully charged battery. The
wiring diagram in the Bentley fails to enlighten an electroignoramus like
me on this subtle Q.
