[T2] Single cab Gas Tank removal

I have one of those I put in my ’65 – with the idea being, I could shut off fuel coming from the tank. I think it is a 3 position – regular, off, and reserve.

I always intended to add a cable to run up to the front of my bus, but that is pretty low on my list of To Do’s.

Come to think of it, I think it is 3 position. Same valve body as the hand operated one on a bug or Porsche.

trying to think back to my olde bus did that cable actually shut off all the fuel or just pull a reserve valve so you had an extra gallon or so??

I had the one out of my double cab once and it seems like it was a tight
fit.I think you have to remove the fitting for clearance. I'm gonna do the
same to my 56 single cab, but that one has the cable operated shutoff.

I have put racing gas electric shut offs on my tank, no ignition on, no
gas leaves tank, period. not all that expensive, bit of a hassle to
install but relay on ignition at coil controls it and if ever there is an
issue on the road, turn off ignition and there is no fuel flow.

at this point I would try to get as much gas out of tank as possible
before working on it any way you can that is safe.

For sure, be ready when the gas starts flowing out. even 1 gallon running
down your arm is a very bad thing. Further is the danger of fire. I like
to
do this stuff outdoors. 40 years ago my younger brother worked on a car in
his attached garage, burnt up the car, the garage and the house. Nearly
hurt his young wife and son.
Ask: how can this go wrong?
That is one reason I like to get that filter out of inside the tank. Never
have to fool with that again. A good hemostat type clamp on the hose and
you can easily change an under tank filter.

Be ready with a way to stop the flow of gas when you grab the fuel line.
I spent some time under my bus one day until my son happened by with a
broken hose and no way to plug the tank (!

Yeah, If I drain a tank - I'll definitely be replacing fuel lines. As
far as painting inside that area - it is mostly in very good condition, I
think. It looked like it was covered in a thick layer of grime, and dust.
I'll probably just scrub it out, and maybe if I see any rust, I'll put
some
of that master series stuff on there.

    Hey Kevin,
While your at it, you might as well get the gas tank area cleaned up
and painted and replace the fuel lines too!
