soak em in PB blaster for a time, days, weeks to loosen the 'stuff" on 
them.  is my only thought..

I bought new Thule brackets for my roof rack and they hold great and 
they have a model just for the VW bus although the dealer will probably 
have to order it special, probably not a stock item', I know mine took a 
couple weeks to arrive.
