Ok - this is actually a 3rd gear problem, but I thought I'd tag along on this thread - as my problem came up right after I was jinxed, I mean right after I read this post. My '78 westy does not want to go into 3rd gear, without a LOT of jiggling, wiggling, and forcing of the shifter. 1st and 2nd seemed a little off too. I thought-I'll check my clutch pedal free play. According to Bentley is should be between 5/8" and 1". I had 1.5", so I tightened up the cable. This seemed to help 1st and 2nd gear, but 3rd is still a problem. I came home. With car parked, engine off, it is still difficult to shift into 3rd. I was going to start taking the sift rod off - and see if it has come out of adjustment? I have 2 small kids, who love to play in the bus, I wonder if they could have hit this hard enough to screw up its adjustment? Should I be looking somewhere else - any ideas or suggestions on where to begin troubleshooting? I have taken this shifter apart on my '65, if I'm reading the Bentley correctly - the '78 looks the same. Is that correct? -Kevin Guarnotta Jamaica Plain, MA '78 Westy '69 Singlecab '65 Ez-camper
