I have experience with using mechanical points with an electronic 
ignition. The 3000 mile tune up became a 6000 mile tune up as the 
rubbing block wore slightly. The spark plugs would last easily 
15000-20000 miles. This was a 70's era Delta CD (capacitive discharge) 
ignition system. Also had a build it yourself from Radio Shack ( same 
unit in kit form). Both worked flawlessly. I still have the RS unit on 
the shelf as I transitioned to FI with dizzyless integrated ignition.
