[T2] Engine intermittently turns off while coming to a stop

Hi everyone,

This weekend I took my van to my brother's wedding, where good fun was had
and my van shuttled many things about. Upon driving home, about 120 miles,
during the last 10 miles, whenever I came to a stop sign the bus engine
would die. It starts right back up and drives normal, and then when coming
to a stop, it dies, but more like just cutting out.

I believe it occurs when I shift from third to second gear. It has been
hard to pinpoint the exact time it cuts out.

Around 400 miles ago I did my normal tune-up with everything checking out
well. Could I have some bad fuel that is making it persnickety? It seems
almost like I stall it, but no bucking or anything of the sort, just shift
into second and then the red oil and gen light comes on and the engine is
no longer running.

In the engine bay nothing appears loose or poorly connected. The belt is
deflecting within normal specs. Any ideas before I start my own
hare-brained diagnosing techniques?

My bus is a '71 with a 1600dp in it. I have a 34 pict-3 carb and an
alternator.

Thanks all,

Max
