No answers yet? I haven't done a rebuild, but I'm looking to rebuild my Type 1 engine in the near future after an overheating incident... I would think that a good starting point would be the Tom Wilson book How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine. Then use the Internets to supplement that book. The info over at http://www.aircooledtech.com/ looks good as well Ratwell's stuff (http://www.ratwell.com/). There are also Bob Hoover's notes as well (is there an archive somewhere?). For entertainment value check out out Hambone's VW (and other engine, cooking, hunting) videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc3Qefc5ItE. There is another VW rebuilding book that should be coming out in February published by Haynes and written by Laurie Pettitt. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Volkswagen-Air-Cooled-Engine-Rebuild-Manual/dp/0857332465/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3VPZ2S70KR5LH&coliid=I3KWRRBBSJMRD5 Laurie Pettitt is the man when in comes to rebuilds in the UK scene. I plan to buy study this when it is released. If I had the time and money, then I would go Fuel Injection via MegaSquirt. I'm sure there are much more knowledgeable folks who can answer your questions on this list... Cheers, Josh . ________________________________ From: Christophe Guilbert <cguilbert at picasso.ucsf.edu> To: TYPE2 at type2.com Sent: Friday, 18 October 2013, 4:38 Subject: [T2] enhance engine build tips Hi , First, I really would like to thanks everyone in this list who help me diagnose my engine problem. I finally decided to rebuild my 2.0L CA (vanagon 1983) engine. I am starting tomorrow and hope to finish within a week. I have great expectation with this new engine and plan to reach the arctic circle (CA -> Alaska) with my kids next summer ! I would really appreciate the experiences and tips of those who rebuilt this engine. Any tips to make it more reliable and more powerful than the original one. Any tips concerning parts which can't be find anymore. Manufacturer , etc .... Here are some of those questions (non exhaustive list) 1) What is the best head out there 2) Parts to upgrade for more power. 3) Engine enhancement strategy , better oil cooling system, .... 4) Incorporate a temp sensor (at a different location than the sparking plug) 5) Where I can find a mechanic to balance the engine in California (bay area) 6) I remember someone mention ( a long time ago) a sealant which was use to seal airplane Aluminum Engine , does anyone remind me what it was ? 7) Any any tips to enhance the rebuild engine would be welcome. I promise that I'll create a nice website (with pics) with a compilation of all the improvements including of course the new spec of the engine once installed on my baby ! Thanks for any help.
