Hi John,
First there are at least four different types of RGBs.

1950-55 Barndoor RGBs, which were pretty much the same as used on WWII Kubelwagens.

1955-63 commonly known as small nut RGBs 36 mm.

1963 Only one ton RGBs, which is very hard to find parts for.

1964-67 commonly known as big nut RGBs 46 mm

There is also a subset of the small and large nut RGBs where the internal gearing of the RGB was lower for Mountain Gearing.

As for parts it depends on what you mean by parts. Bearings are available at any bearing supply house, gaskets you make yourself, and the rest is swap meet or online classifieds.

The Beetle transaxle was the same used by the Bus, just the gearing was changed and RGBs added.

As for effect of the RGBs on the transaxle and gearing. It all depends on on the gearing of the transaxle in question, what your expectations are MPH and RPM wise, and how handy you are at fixing mechanical problems.
