My physicist buddy adds:

        When fitting my first set of LRR tyres I was told by the guy in the
Bridgestone agency that he was now fitting all Auckland Council vehicles
with them - not because they saved fuel (although they undoubtedly did) but
because the accountants had found that they got an extra 10,000km of tyre
life.
        Not only are they saving the planet through reduced fuel usage, but
also they are saving lives through reduced “black carbon” air pollution.
