Dave,

I remember going though this very thing many many years ago.

Replaced the steering box and other parts as you have done.

Open the door and watch how much the wheel moves as you move the
steering wheel.  If i remember correctly the bently tells how much it 
should move(how much slack it should have)

Definitely adjust the steering box adjustment...read bently first!

My problem turned out to be......wrong tires on the front!
Replaced with the absolute VW bus correct tires and all was good.
