one of the best investments I made on my 78 was to put in electric fuel 
shut off valves.  turn ignition off. fuel is shut off right at the tank.

would also help in case of fire too since the fuel supply would be cut off 
at the source.  was a PITA to install and had engine and tranny out when I 
did it. but is wired to coil so when power is off valves are closed. yes 
there is a small amount of fuel in the lines but not much.
