Having lived in a VW Bus for many years and broken down far off the beaten path, I always carry: v-belt and tools/skills required to change it (has nobody mentioned this?), distributor cap, rotor and condenser (or a complete spare distributor), return springs for carburetors, fuel pump and gaskets, spark plugs (and helicoil kit for when they strip), oil pressure sender (for when they spring a leak), valve adjusting screws, nuts and a feeler gauge (for when they strip), static or strobe timing light (and the wrenches to adjust timing), clutch cable nut (rear) and clevis pin (front), keeper springs for the accelerator pedal rod, a few spare wire connectors and the crimping tool, tie wire, duct tape, tubeless tire plugs and a pump, fuel some fuel line and a spare filter, BIG lug nut wrench and a 3' cheater pipe (for when the guy who mounted your wheels used an impact wrench)... Most of this will fit in an old milk crate with room to spare, and you can start you own mobile repair business on the side (grin). +1 on the floor jack. You don't want to find your jacking points have rusted away since the last time you fixed a flat...
