Thanks – those are the bushings I was referring to. I don’t think the fact that these were missing is the cause of my shifting woes. I think they just make the shifting a little sloppy. One of the bushings in the coupler/cage thing was pretty much wasted. This is what I think the problem was.

So I’ll just replace the cage now – and save the other bushings for a time that I pull the engine. Which is not now ;)

You need to pull the engine/trans to pull the shift rod out.  You only need to pull the rod to replace the rear shift rod bushings (not the cage)  #21 and 24 (for a 78) in this diagram.
