that works with the transmissions that don't have the guide tube
between the TO bearing and the input shaft.  the early TO bearing just
floats on the TO arms.

so all splits, 68-70 bays, and through 70 beetles. 71+ should be the
transition year.

except, of course, that all sorts of swapping has happened over the
years - so use the trans guide tube/lack of guide tube as a....guide.
