Wives tale. The only reason to not drive on a tire in the other direction is if it has a directional tread design. For a directional, it has to stay pointed in the same direction - so to rotate sides, you'd remount the tire the other side out on the wheel. (not uncommon to be done in staggered configurations (smaller front/larger rear) Even the asymmetrical designs can run both ways - they simply have an inside/outside that must be adhered to. You don't find a single tire manufacturer to tell you that you can't diagonally rotate tires as long as the tread design accommodates it. http://www.michelinman.com/US/en/safe-driving/tire-safety/tire-rotation.html http://www.goodyearautoservice.com/service/Services/Tire-Rotation/pc/668/155127.uts You will often find different recommendations for front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive vs 4wd - but that's about trying to balance the different types of tread wear, not about the tires themselves. And our old VWs - particularly those with swing axle rear ends - have their own wear patterns to contend with.
