as you have discovered the guys that are knowledgable are retiring or 
otherwise leaving the business.

I suspect you would  be able to count on your hands the number of folks 
that "actually" know what thier doing in the entire lower 48 of the entire 
country.

I recently sent my engine from Baltimore to Arkansas to get rebuilt.
Derrick and Danny at "way out Salvage" (and they are REALLY way out there) 
are among the few left.

not convienient but they do a decent job (so far) and charge a fair price 
and get the work done in a reasonably time. so not much more can be asked 
for something this old.   might be someone closer but since I am on the 
East Coast that was who did my engine, but closer is not always better. 
avoid the crate engines they tend to be iffy you might get a good one and 
you might not.
