Regarding 83 vanagon (sort of off topic, but would also apply to type 2).
We purchased a 115 amp hour Ups battery . Skip trying to cram something under the drivers seat. As with air cooled, bigger is better.
Runs our truckfridge for three days easy. Ours is rectangular  and fits in well under rear seat. I believe in an late type 2 you could mount it where the spare goes inside and mount tire outside?
