cranked and cranked and it kept trying to start but wouldn't catch.....

Don't know anything about crane ignition systems but have heard if the
battery voltage drops to around 9V while cranking, the system may have
issues.  Same with MDS

between sessions of phutzing with it I keep it on the charger and it is 
cranking hard so pretty sure got full 12v.

Put a voltmeter on + of coil to see what it gets while cranking.  Did 
you trying a jumper wire right from + to battery itself?

Check your firing order one more time.  If you have  your order at 1,2,3,4
instead of 1,4,3,2 you will get firing but no start.
