Which is actually a fun thing to do with cracked beyond useable T1 cases of course, toss it on the bonfire...
 
But lots of places weld T1 cases, and any of the classic big rebuilders if they still do so, can still do so just fine and safely I'd guess.  Just gets less practical every build cycle to build one again particularly to fix critical issues.  To preserve a numbers matching case in a collector car, well that is different...
 
In WV we went with Larry's Offroad in OH (who is still there I presume) and more often with Keiths Foreign Auto who was and again still is in WV I presume.  Whether either weld on cases today, I don't know, but they used to a plenty.  And there were points when things were too far gone regardless.
