Thanks for the advice!  Just about the only part of the van that I didn't restore (it was a chicken coop when I got it) was the front end (except for the newer model steering box and column I grafted in).  Restoration was finished about 10 years and 40Kmi ago, so it is definitely time for some work.
I spent a couple of hours yesterday preventatively replacing the clutch cable and bowden tube (it is now much smoother).  That disabused me of the idea of doing any serious front end work :)
