[T2] Radio, DIN Opening & Rip Van Winkle

In my Sturm und Drang years, I had no qualms butchering and otherwise
"upgrading" my bus in the name of progress and entertainment. I now
regret most (but not all) of these irreversible mods. Not that they
were wrong; it's just that my preferences changed. In short, I would
think twice before cutting, even something as minor as a dash radio
opening.

Instead you could perhaps use the opening to install 3 round gauges in
a row, if the gauge body is indeed under 45mm in diameter? I think
busboys even sells an adaptor for that. As for the radio, I got rid of
it. Instead, I have an iPod charger and a small jack in the glove box.
The jack is connected to a concealed amp elsewhere in the bus. An arm
with a suction cup on the windshield keeps the iPhone in easy reach
for both pilot and copilot. It also doubles as a GPS.

Greetings,

I know that in the past I've changed the radio a few times and never
had a problem fitting one in the 45mm high slot. The "past" being
before Phrogbus was out of daily service for a quarter century.

So now it's the twenty-first century and all the rage are these DIN
(DIN as in GERMAN Standards Institute) sized "mech-less" radios. I
mean DIN, VW, they gotta fit, especially since they don't need to
accommodate the eight-track, right?

They don't. I just bought a neat, cheap little DIN radio from Wally
World that even has a remote control in case I ever mange to get my
wife into the back seat and I need help from Barry White.

It's 50mm high while the opening is only 45mm.

While there are now DIN sized radios under a hundred that will
wirelessly interface with an iPhone and make coffee, there are very
slim pickings in 45mm sets and they're way over priced and very
steal-worthy.

The width of the opening and the size of the indentation in the dash
padding are OK, it's just the height that's a problem.

So does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone expanded the opening
with any success?

Peace

Phroggie and his Phrogbus
