[T2] travailing out to CA again & GPS systems

Hello List,

I have used Garmin in the past but found it too expensive to upgrade maps. Google Maps and Mapquest both have a turn -by-turn feature for smart phones for free which I use. Although I don't think they work with coordinates or via points.

As far a using them in a bus, well mine usually fails me when I need them most. I like to take my bus camping in some pretty mountainous, secluded places. When dealing with roads at varying elevations that pass close to each other, GPS can get confused.

I once followed Garmin down a narrow dirt road at night that had a mountain on one side and a river on the other. It turned out to be a dead end road with no room to turn around at the end. Of course, my back up lights decided to stop working that night. My wife had to stand behind the bus with a mag light while I backed up a half a mile or so until we could get back on the main road.

It is a must to keep maps handy. I also strongly recommend becoming a AAA member. You get all the free maps you want which is only a perk to all the other great benefits of being an AAA member.
