[T2] Grease: CV Joint vs Wheel Bearings

Roger, that is a tough one.  Some moly's are a reasonable wheel bearing choice, some are not.  If it says it is good for it on the can, it is.  More importantly classically moly's didn't like to live with classic lithium "wheel bearing" greases, so if you did this switch you needed to either be replacing bearings, or cleaning them, the races, the inside of the hubs, and seals all fully.  A real chore unless you are replacing all with new.  If just repacking, I usually just did a quick wipe out/off and repack.

Again classically I did like a proper moly for long term stability, and water resistance over an old cheap "wheel bearing" grease, but if you got a good semi-synthetic today that would be a wash, and even with the 20 year old tub of Lubro-moly wheel bearing I still have, as long as I did a quick wipe off and repack every 4-5 years, it would last forever as well (still is fine in the tub 20 years on.)  15+ year old in service is where it usually became rock hard.

So as with everything, YMMV.

John

Greetings,

Can (should?) the same moly grease that's required by the CV joints be used in the wheel bearings?
