Aggregate codes
The aggregate code consists of two numbers. The first bumber identifies the type of engine in the bus, the second number shows the type of gearbox used.
The Type 1 engine is the engine that comes from the VW Beetle. The Beetle is the first vehicle model Volkswagen ever produced, in technical documentation the Beetle is often called 'Type 1'. A type 1 engine can be easily recognized by the fan housing which is placed on top of the engine, the cooling fan is mounted on the axle of the generator/alternator.
The Type 4 engine was first used in the VW 411, hence it's name. It is also nicknamed 'flat 4' or 'pancake' engine. The fan housing and cooling fan are placed at the same high of the engine and they face the rear of the car.
